Jon's Mom's Spaghetti Sauce, from Betty Crocker =============================================== 2009-04-02 Ingredients ----------- 1 lb ground turkey (or ground beef if you like -- it has more fat) 1 lb italian sausage (I like hot italian sausage) 2 medium onions 1 bell pepper (green, or other if you like) 2 cloves garlic (optional, or more, or less) 30 oz tomato sauce (e.g. 1 big can) 24 oz tomato paste 1 packet of Lawrey's Spaghetti Seasoning 1 tsp oregano 1 Tbs sugar 3 Cups of water 1 bay leaf (optional) 1 can olives (optional, I never use them) Directions ---------- 1. Remove casing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casing_(sausage) from Italian sausage 2. Cook Italian sausage and ground turkey over medium heat until pinkness goes away. Break the meat into bite sized pieces while it is cooking, and stir once in awhile so it cooks evenly. I do this in largeish pan (sometimes nonstick), because you will add more to the pan later. 3. Chop onions, bell pepper, and optional garlic while waiting for meat to cook. 4. Once meat is not going to kill anybody, drain excess fat. I usually tilt the pan so the liquid goes to one side, and then use a spoon to scoop out the fat into a "fat jar" (thrown away later). You can skip this step, but the sauce may have small pools of oil if you do - especially if you used ground beef. 5. Add onions and bell pepper to cooked meat. Stir occassionally, wait for vegetables to soften. 6. Once meat and vegetables are all cooked together, I usually transfer everything to a slow cooker. However, you can also do everything on the stove. Just turn the heat down a little. 7. Add all the remaining ingredients and stir it around. 8. Stir once every 15-20 minutes to prevent sauce burning on the edges of the pan. 9. Let sauce cook for about 2 hours. 10. Cook pasta. 11. Eat sweet pasta. Mmmm.. Review ------ Yum!
